The Glock 22

by CmdrFenix on Dec.11, 2009, under Firearms Review

So with the only ammo that I can seem to get reliably being .40 S&W, I made the decision to purchase a handgun in this caliber. I’ve actually had this gun for several months as many of my friends will know, but I’ve been lax about getting this review written, so here it is! So many to choose from, but I finally settled on a Third Generation Glock 22. I got two 15 rnd magazines with the gun, but for IDPA picked up a third magazine.

Likes:

- Light weight
- Easy to break down and clean
- 5.5lb trigger pull is close to the pull on my 1911
- It seems to feed and fire just about everything I have thrown at it
- Recoil is very easy on this gun

Dislikes:

- Trigger safety does take some getting used to
- Standard Glock sights; I prefer the three dot sites…
- Width of the gun; almost 20% wider than my single stack 1911 (1” on the 1911 versus 1.2” on the Glock)

Went to Walmart over the span of 4 days and bought 20 boxes of Blazer Brass .40 S&W for about $12/box. That is now running around $14/box, but still VERY affordable. Cheaper ammo = more shooting and more fun! Took her out to the range and started blasted away at first 15ft and then moved it out to 25ft. (most pistol fights occur at distances of around 10-15ft, but testing at 25ft is a challenge for me, and I love challenges). Groups were all within the center circle. They were not my best group, but I need to take her out to range a bit more in order to practice on it.

For a holster, I have a generic IWB Mike’s holster, but I knew I needed something better. So I picked up the Blackhawk Serpa CQC holster on lapolicegear.com. Not a huge fan of polymer based holsters, but this one has me VERY impressed. The locking mechanism and extremely smooth draw is superb.

All together I have to say I am impressed. Can I say I’m a Glock nut/fan? No. Is it growing on me a bit? Yes. Would I buy another should the need entail? Perhaps. Right now, if anyone is looking at a .40 S&W I would definitely point them at this gun. I mean there are other options, but at around $500 for this, you can’t beat the price for sure.

“most pistol fights occur at distances” … you’re still worried about that, eh? :-P

  • CmdrFenix

It’s all about what is “reasonable”. Would I ever shoot at someone who is more distant than that? Probably not. If the person is retreating, would I pursue? Maybe. It all depends on the circumstances.

Hey you have your Katana, I have my Glock. I choose to arm myself with what I feel is the best weapon for the job. Does everyone agree with me? No. Do I care how anyone else feels about it? Nope. I prefer to practice for what I feel are the two most likely events coming down the road:

    - Zombie apocalypse
    - Hordes of criminals lurking around the corner preparing their assault on my worldly possessions!
    :-P

I just hope I never live in a world as crazy and anarchistic as you imagine ours to be.

I like the 12 guage with the 6 1 oz slugs in it near the bed. I can make a 100 yard shot with it, or use the hand to hand combat training I learned in the Marines to give a serious (possibly fatal) beating to someone within arms reach.
That, and I love the 1911A1.
There is no amount of force that is unreasonable in my view when defending my 9 month old son.

  • Tim

Look out, I heard a noise! It’s probably just the floorboards settling, but it might be AN ARMY OF HOME INVADERS WHO WANT TO … uh … walk around in my living room and “invade” … or something …. OR DRAW A SILLY MOUSTACHE ON MY 9 MONTH OLD SON! ALPHA TWO CHARLIE, REQUEST FIRE MISSION GRID ONE SIX, FIRE FOR EFFECT!

I can’t imagine what it’s like to live so paranoid that you spend more then 10 minutes per year worrying about such things, assuming you dont live in down town NYC.. Do you ever sleep?

  • CmdrFenix

Who said anything about living in a paranoid world? We are just prepared should anything happen. Neither of us are looking to shoot anyone or harm another person. I am not sure what to do about that post, shake my head or laugh…

This was SUPPOSED to be a review of my Glock pistol, not a discussion about self defence in the home. TY for taking this completely off track. :-P

  • Tim

There’s a difference between being prepared and being paranoid. Being prepared is taking a self defense class. Being paranoid is wearing a crotch holster. (and yes, I picked that example deliberately).

I realize that it’s completely pointless to try and get either of you to understand that you might somehow be able to defend against ‘realistic’ threats without the need to call in a JDAM, but you don’t want to hear that.

Myself, I just admit that I like guns, and I like to punch little holes in paper targets. I don’t try to justify my enjoyment of shooting with any fear-based motivation about nightmare scenarios of “defending my home” or other bullshit like that.

  • Jeremy

I like punching holes in pieces of paper, tin cans, steel targets at 300 yds, and the occasional deer or pheasant. I don’t live paranoid, but I do have a 12ga by the bed, and usually take a handgun if I leave the house. I look in the newspaper every day and see people being robbed, having their homes invaded, carjackings, and shootings in schools and the mall. Lots of it happens here in NH. It’s not unreasonable to carry a firearm or keep one in the home. I’m not calling in a JDAM or a tomahawk missile, just being prepared. I keep a few gallons of water in the house and a little extra non-perishable food, also reasonable things to do.

  • Tim

Sucks to live in fear, doesnt it?

  • CmdrFenix

Tim believes the way he does, and I believe the way I do. Do I feel I live in fear? No…

  • Jeremy

I don’t live in fear at all. I like being prepared. Nations build armies because they need to. Towns have police and fire because they live in the real world, not in one filled with puppies and lollipops. They don’t sit around without any tools to take care of everyday situations because they believe others will laugh at them. I don’t care how you feel about me, nor do I mind if you decide not to own firearms or carry them. I keep a fire extinguisher in my kitchen, a spare tire on my truck, a smoke alarm near the wood stove, and a firearm on my hip or in my bedroom. All of them are common sense preperations for things that happen everyday to someone somewhere.

  • Tim

I’m not on fire, it’s just a little hot in here.

  • Jeremy

Grab a fire extinguisher, unless you’re afraid :)

  • Tim

You missed the point entirely, but that’s fine.

  • Jeremy

that’s ’cause I’m one of those dumb liberals.

  • Tim

You’re neither dumb nor liberal lol, I think it was just an obscure joke on my part ;-)
