No agenda?

by CmdrFenix on May.19, 2009, under Political Discussion

Someone was telling me that they didn’t feel there was any hidden agenda by politicians to try and take away our second amendment right to keep and bear arms. I told them that anytime a law is passed that restricts our rights without good reason, then I consider that restriction to be part of the hidden agenda I feel is there. What other purpose could it be? If local politicians ban say .50 caliber rounds on the premise of public safety (ignoring the fact they have NEVER been used in the commission of a crime), then there is no other reason in my mind except to chip away at our rights. Unless they can make the case otherwise, but the burden of evidence is on them.

“We use this to stop a vehicle,” Bratton said, holding up a gold .50 caliber bullet longer and thicker than a finger. “Unless you are out trying to kill Godzilla, and I think the last time we saw Godzilla was in the 1950s, there is no need for this type of weapon” unless it is in the hands of the military or law enforcement, he said.

I am curious how often the LAPD have had to tackle Godzilla… Again, these rounds/weapons have NEVER to my knowledge been used in the commission of a crime so why go through all the hoopla to ban something that isn’t a problem? Don’t even get me started on so called “assault weapons”.

I have fired the Barret M99 at a local range. It was fun times to be sure. The rifle is several thousand dollars and the rounds are hideously expensive unless you reload. Of course the Police Chief in that article thinks that he is one of the “only ones” who should be allowed to have or carry this and other weapons. How does that badge and uniform suddenly make them better than any of us? I can take the same safety courses… What special powers do they gain?

Paige was lecturing a group of students and parents of the Orlando Minority Golf Association in April of 2004. He gave a very condescending lecture, during which he held up his duty weapon and said, “I’m the only one in this room, that I know of, professional enough to carry this Glock 40.” He then pointed the gun at his foot and discharged a round into his leg.

Yep… that is definitely one of the “only ones” who should be allowed to protect us and carry guns. If it’s a choice between asshats like that and my 1911… I’ll take my 1911 any day of the week thank you.

This just in, the state of new hampshire dept of safety changed the speed limit on rural route 13 from mile marker 20 to 25, raising the speed limit from 30mph to 35mph – it’s just a clever ruse in support of their hidden agenda to trample the rights of little kids to walk across the street without needing to look both ways first!

Not everything has hidden motives, sometimes its just shit that happens.

And -AGAIN- I’ll pose the question – where was all this outrage over “chiseling away at our rights” before january 09? I seem to recall having more of my rights “chiseled at” during the last 8 years then in the entire history of the united states from civil war to present …..

Oh I totally agree with the whole, “Where were the cries during the previous eight years…”. I only restarted my website mid last year… BEFORE Obama’s election. I am just now getting involved again with politics. *shrug* That doesn’t change the point I’m making nor the feelings I have.

Oh come now… No comment on the “only one” in that video?

The guy in the vid was clearly an idiot. Morons exist, and despite our best efforts will find their way into every sector of society. Corporate CEOs, Police, Politicians, NRA Chairmen, Sailors, Snow Plow Operators, DEA Agents, Fast Food Workers, and so on .. all will have morons in their ranks.

My point was, all the “erosion of rights” from the last 8 years still isnt fixed yet. If you want something truly valid to criticize the current political body (all 3 branches, both parties) about – criticize them about not repairing the damage wrought by BushCo. The supposed “war on guns” crap that the wrongwingers fly off the handle about is a total joke. Some small town passes a local ord against carrying military grade assault weapons opencarry’ed into a classroom by students of legal age, and the NRA types spout “ZOMG TRAMPLIN MAH RAHTS!” like they had burned the constitution in effigy or something. It’s insane, and I am constantly shocked and dismayed that intelligent people fall into that pattern. If you want to get outraged over second amendment issues, wait for Gub’Mint to try (emphesis on “try” since the effort would fail, horribly) to institute some kind of universal firearm ban.

Oh wait, that won’t ever happen even with the dipshits we keep sending to washington. No worries, that energy can be focused elsewhere, like outrage that Gub’Mint doesnt do more to help kids pay for college, right?

This statement is completely bogus. At no point has anyone even proposed something so ludicrous. Now they did advocate allowing teachers to carry concealed in TX, and if they have the training then sure. Maybe Columbine would have been less tragic.

Also there is no such thing as assault weapons. That is an application for the firearm and has no bearing on what type of weapon it is. If I attach the bayonet to my Mosin does that magically change it to an assault weapon? Do you draw a distinction between a full auto or semi auto AR-15? What makes one an assault weapon and the other not?

I think if we got rid of the war on drugs… disbanded the ATF (or at least the F part)… and cut other useless programs (I would have to dive into the current budget and see what exactly) then I’m sure we could help kids pay for college, offer first time home buyers a better incentive, and offer a gov’t health care OPTION for people as an alternative to private insurance. Note the option part…

I used the school thing as an example of something that would seem (to most people) as a common-sense “regulation” that is in no way inappropriate. The point I was getting at is that people stretch -very- thin to take something that happened and claim its “rights infringement”….

You can split hairs for hours about what’s an “assault weapon” and what isnt, the term has a common parlance use that you know as well as I :-P

I’m all for axing the “department of faith based bullshit that forces you to accept jesus before you can get assistance” before any of the others. I’m with you on making public health care an optional thing, and I’m quite confident that within 10 years 99% of people would opt-in for it.

Government uses incremental laws to take rights away, and have been doing so with the 2nd ammendmant for quite some time. If you read the constitution and any of the founders writings, they wanted people to be have military weapons in order to turn back government. Benjamin Franklin in Philly started a militia when the governer would’nt. It was made up of individuals with their own weapons that voluntarily came out to drill or go to war. If you slowly take away certain types of weapons and ammunition, eventually you’ll be left with nothing. Ask people in Australia or the UK where their gun rights went after they were incrementally taken from them. Ask them how crimes committed with firearms have gone up exponentially after people lost their guns. Not to mention the numbers of people around the world in the last 100 years that have been slaughtered by their governments after they were disarmed. 20 to 25 million in Russia, 10 to 20 million in Germany, millions in Cambodia, Armenia, the list goes on and on… Nearly every study done shows more guns = less crime.

It’s also amusing that you believe that people will opt to go on gov’t health care. Look at the countries that have it. They cant even afford to do research, let alone treat cancer or even an give an MRI for diagnosis. Ask the elderly people that break bones how well the “free” health care works. My 80 year old great aunt broke her arm, she had it fixed up in no time. In the UK, you live with a broken arm if you’re that old. If you think that won’t happen here, you’re wrong. All of the health care innovation happens here because people want to make money, it’s called capitolism. It’s sad that you believe you have a mandate to take my property away from me in order to provide yourself with free healthcare. People in the UK are pulling their own teeth with pliars instead of waiting in line for a year or more for dental treatment. Theyre actually working their way back to a private system. Government can’t do anything right, let alone healthcare. Don’t forget though, hospitals are required by law to provide treatment for anyone regardless of ability to pay for it, causing my health care cost to go way up. Government is not charity.

I dont know where you get the accepting Jesus department. Last time I checked, government is fairly hostile to Jesus. As I read it, Congress shall not establish a religion, nor prohibit the free expression thereof. I read the constitution, and not once did I find the words seperation or church anywhere in it.

If you list a problem, I can probably tell you how government caused it and made it worse trying to fix it.
