Full body scanning coming to an airport near you?
by CmdrFenix on May.21, 2009, under Political Discussion
I honestly hope not. If this bill from Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) passes we’ll have a choice when we go to the airport. I’ve read other articles about this, and the technology gives me pause. I’m sorry, but a strip search each time I go to the airport? How much dignity or personal rights are we willing to give up to be safer? At what point do the terrorist win?
The images offer a disturbingly accurate view of a person’s body underneath clothing, even allowing Transportation Security Administration officials to distinguish gender or see the sweat on a person’s back. Americans should not be required to expose their bodies in this manner in order to fly.
No agenda?
by CmdrFenix on May.19, 2009, under Political Discussion
Someone was telling me that they didn’t feel there was any hidden agenda by politicians to try and take away our second amendment right to keep and bear arms. I told them that anytime a law is passed that restricts our rights without good reason, then I consider that restriction to be part of the hidden agenda I feel is there. What other purpose could it be? If local politicians ban say .50 caliber rounds on the premise of public safety (ignoring the fact they have NEVER been used in the commission of a crime), then there is no other reason in my mind except to chip away at our rights. Unless they can make the case otherwise, but the burden of evidence is on them.
“We use this to stop a vehicle,” Bratton said, holding up a gold .50 caliber bullet longer and thicker than a finger. “Unless you are out trying to kill Godzilla, and I think the last time we saw Godzilla was in the 1950s, there is no need for this type of weapon” unless it is in the hands of the military or law enforcement, he said.
Stuff

Well this weekend has been busy. I went out and watched Star Trek again. Absolutely amazing movie. It had some incredible writing, and the acting was superb. Carl Urban as Dr McCoy was my favorite. If you haven’t gone to watch it, do it. Even if you aren’t a Trekkie.
In terms of geek stuff I’ve been doing this weekend. Let’s see:
- Rebuilding my file server here at home finally after 6 yrs. Got some parts and will upgrade her to 750GB of total storage on a RAID5 array under Ubuntu 9.04.
- Going to an open carry litter pick up tomorrow at the Concord State House.
- Dealt with some problems at work already this weekend!
Fun times… but anyhow, check out this trailer:

Montana's line in the sand.
by CmdrFenix on May.11, 2009, under Political Discussion
We all know the federal government fears civilian ownership of firearms, and they should. We’re the last line of defense for freedom should it truly become threatened. NH tried to draw a line in the sand with HCR-6, but that bill was railroaded in executive session by Democrats. HCR-6 was just a reaffirmation of our states rights.
Whereas the Constitution of the State of New Hampshire, Part 1, Article 7 declares that the people of this State have the sole and exclusive right of governing themselves as a free, sovereign, and independent State; and do, and forever hereafter shall, exercise and enjoy every power, jurisdiction, and right, pertaining thereto, which is not, or may not hereafter be, by them expressly delegated to the United States of America in congress assembled;
This bill spawned dozens of others all across the US. Many of which were able to pass and get signed into law, all the while NH, the state that started it, floundered. To say I was disappointed and angry at legislaters when I heard about this is an understatement.
Here comes Montana though out of the blue with something new. They just passed and signed into law that basically states:

Just what MA needs…
by CmdrFenix on May.09, 2009, under Political Discussion
Massachusetts is a lost cause. Period. End of discussion. There is no hope for the Commonwealth and that is sad in and of itself for the amount of history there. The politicians are “noble elites” that hold the government in a veritable choke hold, they know what is best for everyone, and there is no hope of unseating them. They are still completely delusional in thinking they can legislate crime away! This is purely a political ruse (and you all know just how much I love politics), to push a liberal agenda that includes the complete disarmament of the population and the guarantee of their total reliance on government for everything.
The legislation would also create a new felony of using a gun while committing a misdemeanor, limit gun purchases to one per month, and require sales of guns by private parties to be recorded by licensed gun dealers.
Olofson Conviction Upheld
by CmdrFenix on May.05, 2009, under Political Discussion
This is a case I have been following since he was first charged. I have referred to him in my other posts, but I think it’s about time I put my thoughts down about this one as it seems the main stream media is choosing to completely ignore this case. It should be noted that this is where bloggers and those who read them need to spread the word about issues like this. The media’s lack of response in this case doesn’t honestly surprise me, but that is a topic for another discussion.
David Olofson is a former soldier who was convicted and sentenced to 30 months in prison for knowingly transferring an unlicensed machine gun by the ATF. Mr. Olofson had an older model Olympic Arms AR-15 (semi-automatic) that had a minor recall on it due to the fact it was susceptible to “followdown”, which can cause the disconnecter to fail to hold the hammer in the cocked position, which can then facilitate a 2 rnd burst and jam. Well he didn’t get the recall part for what ever reason. Many years later, he was looking to sell it to someone. They asked to take it out to the range and he accepted. They put close to 800 rnds through it with no problems. Well they suddenly got a 2 rnd burst / jam, and someone reported it to the ATF who confiscated the rifle and proceeded to test it. All of their initial tests were coming back with a legal semi-automatic AR-15 that appears to have simply malfunctioned, but that wasn’t good enough.
Freedom
by CmdrFenix on May.03, 2009, under General
Many of us take this word for granted, but it’s something we can never forget. Freedom is fragile. The freedom to speak our mind, the freedom to own and carry guns, and the freedom to be free in our own home are just a few, but these freedoms are slipping away. There was an instance in CA where a home owner dressed a mannequin up as Sarah Palin and hung it from a tree. People were shocked and dismayed, and the authorities did nothing.
