Amateur Gun Smithing

by CmdrFenix on Apr.29, 2009, under General

A new mod for my Mosin Nagant finally arrived. I got the replacement for the rear sight that installs a standard rail. While I was at it, I also got a new scope for her too. :) I’ll post some pictures of the finished projected once the final parts I ordered have come in. What are the final parts you ask? I’ll just save those for my todo section of this post. ;)

Issues that I ran into:

It’s going to be different for every rifle, but mine being from 1943 meant those pins holding the sight in there for 63 yrs haven’t budged and might they might even have rusted a little. I spoke to a gun smith about this and he suggested that I just soak the sight in good penetrating oil, get a good set of push pins, and proceed to beat it with a hammer. So I removed the barrel and put it under a 2×4 I got from the Home Depot and soaked the pins/sight in WD40 for about 20 hrs.

Well last night I took another stab at it (the first night not going so well), and voila… each of the pins came out with some force. I packaged and sealed the old parts for the sight so I can return this rifle to mint condition later if I choose. I really didn’t want to tap the wood to put this rail/scope on. Also, before screwing in the rail, I made sure to use a good thread locking compound to help with vibration as recommended by the manufacturer. Everything is nice and snug and I’m optimistic it should hold.

Thoughts on the finished rifle:

I might get a higher power scope for this, but I haven’t decided and won’t know until I get her to the range Fri night. I’ve got the docs and stuff I need to sight her in and I’m going to give it a shot (pun intended) before making a decision. I have to admit though, the old girl looks pretty sexy! :)

Things remaining to be done for this rifle:

I’m waiting for them to arrive, but I ordered a bipod for end of this, and (your going to laugh), a laser mount as well. *shifty eyes* I know, I’m a geek, but when I’m done I plan on making all those guys with tricked out AR-15s jealous with my 63 yr old cougar of a rifle!

Inter-American Arms Trafficking Treaty

by CmdrFenix on Apr.24, 2009, under Political Discussion

Well, this treaty that was actually signed back in 1994 by Bill Clinton is now being pushed to be ratified by President Obama. I am extremely concerned for all law abiding gun owners who reload ammunition or even do amateur gun smithing because there is no protection for them in this. As the treaty is written, people who just reload ammunition would need a special “TBD” gov’t license or else they could suffer jail time and fines. Well, I’m not taking this one laying down, so I drafted and sent letters to both NH senators this morning. This is the letter I sent to Senator Judd Gregg:

The UN and the US

by CmdrFenix on Apr.22, 2009, under Political Discussion

It’s funny. Back in grade school, I was chosen to participate in the “Model United Nations”. The teachers at the time thought it would be a splendid way to teach us young children cooperation and show us how the UN works to resolve problems. After 1 day, I realized it was a complete sham and didn’t hold back when someone picked a fight with my country. I think I was Mongolia. Of course, none of my neighbors came to my aid and when push came to shove, and I was ejected when I told the other country where he could stick it. It is only years later that I can appreciate what those teachers were doing and truly understand how much of a complete joke the UN really is.

Obama Presidency Challenged

by CmdrFenix on Apr.17, 2009, under Political Discussion

From where I stand, if he wins the election, he is the president. It’s as simple as that. Even if my candidate looses, the winner is the legit president and thus gets the respect of that office that he earned. I may disagree with his policies, and I will fight him tooth and nail on them, but he is still the president. Currently, There are many challenges to President Obama’s eligibility to be president based on questions surrounding his birth. At last check there were over one dozen lawsuits pending, all requesting proof of his birth in Hawaii. The problem? The Certificate of Live birth that President Obama produced is not actually proof he was born in Hawaii.

HSA is watching

by CmdrFenix on Apr.15, 2009, under Political Discussion

I sincerely hope so. It is true there have been a large number mass shootings through out the United States. I have written about a few here, but it is during this time we must remember the guns DIDN’T make the decision to shoot those police officers. The guns didn’t make the decision to walk into that clinic. Punish the perp and not the tool.

I’d love to take it a step further. Why not punish the local politicians who thought it a good idea to ban conceal carry in those places the mad man showed up. They sold the idea of “Gun Free” zones on the populace saying it would make them safer. I beg to differ. I say we charge each council member with 1 count of manslaughter and see if they still support gun control. Could a gun in the hand of ONE person stopped the whole massacre before it started? I guess we’ll never find out, but I can bet the families of the victims have thought about it, and I can tell you that I have thought about it.

They aren't pirates anymore!

by CmdrFenix on Apr.14, 2009, under Political Discussion

Being politically correct seems to be important these days. First they were terrorists… Then they were enemy combatants… Now they are something else. I am absolutely tired of it. They fought against us in war. They fought for a repressive regime that harbored mass murderers, but let’s not hurt their feelings and call them what they are. Now don’t get me wrong… I do not feel they should be held indefinitely, but that doesn’t mean they should be allowed in the United States. If their own country won’t take them back, then so be it. Gitmo it is.

… anyhow, to the purpose of my article.

MA kindly requests sales tax from NH businesses

by CmdrFenix on Apr.09, 2009, under Political Discussion

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, MA has just moved the bar on stupidity to all new heights. I mean come on… MA is saying because you’re a MA resident, if you travel to another state you should STILL pay MA sales tax? Does that mean a MA resident who goes to CT to buy something would need to pay 5% for MA and another 6% (or whatever the current tax rate in CT is) on top of their purchase? Also, why do you think they picked on Town Fair Tire? It’s because they’re a small easy target. They’re testing the waters on a small player and you can be assured that the big boys, Best Buy et all will be their next targets if this pans out.

Recent Tragedies

by CmdrFenix on Apr.08, 2009, under Political Discussion

Now I am sure all of you have heard of the many recent tragedies that have taken place in this country over the past month or so. You cannot blame the arms for what happened. They didn’t pull their own trigger. They didn’t grow legs and walk into the clinic. Hell the Clinic was a “gun free” zone! I have to ask a question, if more law abiding citizens owned and carried guns, could someone have maybe stopped these maniacs sooner? Here is a good quote for you from the FBI, “Crime in the United States” in 1998:

Washington D.C. has essentially banned gun ownership since 1976 and has a murder rate of 56.9 per 100,000. Across the river in Arlington, Virginia, gun ownership is less restricted. There, the murder rate is just 1.6 per 100,000, less than three percent of the Washington, D.C. rate.

Mosin Nagant

by CmdrFenix on Apr.04, 2009, under Firearms Review

Just got back from the gun show in Concord, NH today. I picked up a new toy, but I am guessing you already know what it is… ;)

Right now my head is stuffed and I feel like poop, so this review will actually have my thoughts and feelings toward another Mosin Nagant rifle that I fired this past week or so. Mine is still packed with Cosmoline and I am no shape to clean it. My friend Dave bought one a few weeks back and we finally got his to the range. I absolutely loved that rifle.
